DEVELOPING OUR TIES WITH ISRAEL

Please bid a warm welcome to our two "shinshiniyot", Noa Sabag and Avigail Ilan. Shinshiniyot means 'Young Emissary', and it's a program which brings high school graduates from Israel who have deferred their army duty for a year of national volunteer service. They will be serving as informal educators in Miami and young ambassadors of Israel (shlichim), will teach about Israel and Israeli cuture, and will be the face of Yerucham and Israel in Miami. Noa and Avigail will spend time in many Jewish day schools, synagogue religious schools, youth groups, Jewish Community Centers (JCCs), elderly homes, and with other local community organizations. The plan is for them to be with us one day every week, starting in October. If you would like to meet Noa and Avigail now, click here and let them introduce themselves.

SCHOOL GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

A warm welcome to our in-coming SGC members for 2010-11: Kim LeCompte, Mauricio Assael, Meredith Foster, Lainie Ginsburg and Eduardo Sabo, to our new Parent Association representative on the SGC Alejandro Schatzky, and to our in-coming Chair Deborah Litwak. Farewell and thanks to our out-going SGC members Michelle Gettis, Elizabeth Waingarten, Jean Gordon and Samantha Suaya, and especially to our out-going Chair, Margo Brilliant. For those who don't know our current SGC members, they are Nurit Frydman (Secretary), Rochelle Weinstein, Barbara Amoils, Steven Sanford, Louise Potash, Sue Klau, Sharron Botwinick, Nathalie Serfaty, Isabelle Betancourt-Levey and Lauren Lerner. The SGC was established in 2008/9, as a replacement for the previous School Advisory Board. In its first year the SGC created a 5-year Strategic Plan for the schools of Temple Sinai. PARDeS

Did you know that Jacobson Sinai Academy is affiliated to PARDeS - the Progressive Association of Reform Day Schools? Indeed, JSA was one of the schools that founded PARDeS, almost two decades ago. Sue Klau, a member of our School Governance Committee and a former Temple Sinai Board President, was amongst the founders; David Prashker, our Director of Education, was installed as the new President in January; and Deborah Litwak, the Chair of our School Governance Committee, is also a member of the PARDeS Board.

UPDATE ON THE BRIDGE

We are delighted to announce new gate opening times for the bridge to the JCC. From Monday onwards the gate will now be open from 3:00PM until 6:15PM, on Mondays to Thursdays, enabling you and your children to cross for after-school activities at the JCC. The gate will be manned by a security guard during those hours. Please make sure you reach the gate in time for the 6:15PM closing.

If you would like your child(ren) to take advantage of the many opportunities available at the JCC, the best way is either to become a Family Member, or for your child to become a Temple Sinai Associate Member. All Middle School students are automatically Associate Members as this is included in your tuition fees. For K-5 students the cost for this year will be $125. To become an Associate Member, please see David Prashker; you cannot sign up at the JCC, only at school.

* K-5 students taking part in after-school activities at the JCC will be chaperoned across the bridge; meet at the Day School office at 3:15pm, Michele Burak is the chaperone.

* 6-8 students may also be chaperoned, or make their own way if they have written parental permission and a pass from Mrs Panisch.

* Younger students may be chaperoned by older siblings or another older child, provided we have written consent.

Our ultimate goal is to make our campus and the JCC campus fully integrated, so we can all move safely from any point to any point. The key-word though is 'safely', and that is why we are taking time to put the best possible arrangements in place. We will continue to update you.

PARENT ASSOCIATION

If you are interested in volunteering at our school or Temple, please contact
Nathalie Serfaty: tefinat@earthlink.net or Monica Kerznus: joelmonica@hotmail.com

A new date will be announced shortly - we have decided to move the Parent Association Brunch from Tuesday September 14, to enable more people to attend. Watch this space. The brunch is for everyone, but we especially want to welcome our many new families, to give them an opportunity to meet each other and to get to know parents who have been here for a year or more already. With almost 50 new families in the school this year, please join us to help welcome them, and share your experience of being at JSA.

B'NEI MITZVAH

Is your child becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah during the school year? Whether you are commemorating the event at Temple Sinai, or elsewhere, we want to be part of your celebrations. For many years our b'nei mitzvah have led our Thursday morning t'filah, surrounded by their family and their schoolfriends and teachers. It's an opportunity to rehearse, but also a wonderful occasion of itself. To make arrangements, please contact Sharon.Panisch@tsnd.org or Gabriela.Rascovsky@tsnd.org, or telephone 305 932 9011.

Please make sure we know the date of your child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and up-date us if it gets changed.

LEGACY TILE WALL

If your child was in the last group to paint their tiles for our 3 walls - ECE, K-5 and 6-8 - make sure you take the opportunity to come and see them mounted. There will be many more opportunities to be part of our Legacy Tile Wall throughout the coming school year. Watch this space!
