Temple Sinai follows the rhythm of the Jewish calendar with joyous worship and celebrations of Shabbat and holidays.

Pajama Tot Shabbat

A Short 30 minute service for children 0 to 6 years old, Tot Shabbat is a unique opportunity to teach our youngest ones the values of the most important holiday in Judaism. Babies, toddlers, kids, moms, dads and grandparents welcome Shabbat in a fun-filled service. The service begins at 6:00 PM and is always followed by a “Tot” luck pasta dinner, hosted by Temple Sinai and our ECE parents.

Early Childhood Education Kabbalat Shabbat

Our youngest students, ages 18 months to 5 years old, celebrate Shabbat each Friday with a Kabbalat Shabbat program. Each week, a different class performs and Mitzvah Awards and Birthday Books are presented. Shabbat helpers from each class, Imas and Abas, lead the prayers at the Shabbat table.
Our Music Specialist, Miss Pat (Barski), plays her guitar and leads the singing and generates ruach (spirit) throughout the Feinbloom Sanctuary.
Temple Sinai’s Early Childhood Education Center celebrates a special Grandparents Shabbat each year. There is an open invitation for parents to attend at 9:45 AM every Friday.

Jacobson Sinai Academy Lower School Kabbalat Shabbat

If you haven’t attended a JSA Kabbalat Shabbat program, you have missed one of the most spirited and uplifting services of the week! The children sing and sway to Shabbat music with our music specialist, Elissa Lakofsky and the teachers join in. Each week there is a class performance second to none. Keter Kavod (Crown of Honor) Awards are presented to students who have exhibited exceptional Jewish values. Shabbat leaders lead the prayers for candles – נרות wine – יין and challah – חלה and everyone joins in. The students and teachers end the program with the singing of “Hatikvah – התקוה.” One of the highlights of every school year is our Grandparents Shabbat. Parents have an open invitation to attend the Elementary School Kabbalat Shabbat program every Friday at 8:30 AM.

Jacobson Sinai Academy Middle School Shabbat Assembly

Middle School students have their own Shabbat assembly every Friday at 11:30 am in the Kemelhor Chapel, led by JSA K-8 Principal Toni Weissberg, K-8 Assistant Principal Aliza Kadish and our music specialist Elissa Lakofsky. Each week there are special guest speakers.

Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, a child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the birth of a grandchild, or any other occasion, you may wish to celebrate it with your Temple Sinai community by sponsoring an Oneg. Sometimes several families or even members of a chavurah join together to sponsor one.

Kabbalat Shabbat Services – Friday, 6:15 pm

Temple Sinai’s Shabbat service is a good way to end the week and reflect on life. Each week, we gather for Friday evening services in our Feinbloom Sanctuary or our Kemelhor Chapel. Special services such as Friday Night Live, Interfaith or Choral Kabbalat Shabbats are held in our Sanctuary throughout the year and around once a month we hold our Congregational Shabbat Dinners following the Service. Torah Study – Saturday Mornings, 9:30 am

Shabbat morning Torah Study meets in our Hollander-Rachleff Library, led by Rabbi Alan Litwak, Rabbi Ralph P. Kingsley, Rabbi Sam Rothberg, Bob Sugarman, or one of several local rabbis. A brief prayer service is followed by an extended and spirited discussion of the weekly Torah portion. Coffee, juice, bagels and pastries are served.

The weekly Torah portion (parasha) is read in English, paragraph by paragraph, with many pauses for discussion. Everyone present is welcome to contribute questions, ideas, reflections, concerns. Discussion is varied and is driven entirely by those present. From the scholarly–the way a word is written in the plural when it seems as if it should be singular, a rabbinic commentator’s thoughts—to the political, including the power of contemporary political events to bring new meaning to an ancient text—to the personal— all discussion expands on the parasha’s theme. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie with everyone learning from Torah, and from each other. Bring your own favorite chumash (English Torah translation and commentary), or use one of ours, including the recently published URJ Torah: A Women’s Commentary.

Shabbat Morning Services – Saturday, 10:30 am

On many Saturday mornings from September through June, we celebrate the coming of age of a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, at Shabbat morning services, including Torah reading in our Sanctuary beginning at 10:30 a.m.
